The ADMG at the FENS Forum in Barcelona
Members of the group travelled to Barcelona for the FENS Forum, presenting our work on human brain organoid models of Alzheimer’s disease and meeting colleagues working on human stem-cell models across Europe. See the photos on LinkedIn.

Raising funds for Alzheimer’s disease research (Alzheimer’s disease Foundation)
The ADMG organised an event for raising funds for the Alzheimer Research Foundation to continue their important task of funding the collective efforts across Belgian research groups and Institutes on Alzheimer’s disease research.

Sergio Helgueta and colleagues report that human pluripotent stem cell-derived cerebellar organoids acquire caudal neural tube identity early, then generate both excitatory and inhibitory neurons alongside glia on a timeline mirroring human development. The organoids also express ataxia-related genes, making them a platform for studying cerebellar disease as well as development.

Ira Espuny-Camacho was selected from the submitted abstracts to give a talk at New Horizons in Neurodegeneration, held in Leuven on 9–10 October 2025, presenting the group’s human brain organoid models of Alzheimer’s disease.

Young Investigator Award from the Alzheimer Research Foundation
The Alzheimer Research Foundation recognised the group’s work on human brain organoid models of Alzheimer’s disease with its Young Investigator Award, worth €50,000.

Alzheimer Research Foundation awards €300,000 to the group
Funding for a multicellular human brain organoid model to study the role of microglia in sporadic Alzheimer’s disease — part of €950,000 awarded across three ULiège research groups. Read the announcement.

Alzheimer Research Foundation awards €250,000 for the organoid model
Funding for “Modelling Alzheimer’s disease with 3D human multicellular brain organoids” — building an in vitro model in which human neurons and glial subtypes are derived from the cells of Alzheimer’s disease patients. Part of €600,000 awarded to ULiège from a €3.2 million Belgian programme. Read the announcement.
